Empower A Teen Mother

With funding from individuals, women networks and local corporate organizations, we have provided empowerment opportunities to a total of 200 pregnant girls and teenage mothers in three districts (including Wa Municipal, Wa East and Daffaiman Bussie Issah) in the Upper West Region. 120 girls were supported to learn vocational skills including tailoring, weaving and soap making and 80 were enrolled back to school. All 200 girls were given sexual and reproductive health and rights education and given access to free contraceptives as measures to prevent subsequent unwanted pregnancies. In addition, they were assigned mentors (young women who were once teenage mothers but have attained higher education and successful careers for themselves) to advise, inspire and motivate them to pursue their dreams. More than half of the girls who were enrolled back to school (Junior High School) have transitioned to the Senior High School and some have even completed Senior High School. Also, out of those who were supported to learn vocational skills, 70 of them have completed and with our start-up kit support, they have started small business ventures in their communities to earn a livelihood to provide for their needs and babies.
